Is the earthquake in Marmaris a precursor to a major quake? Expert responds: 'One of the most active areas'
Following the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of the Marmaris district in Muğla, Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz provided notable assessments. Tüysüz answered the question of whether this tremor would lead to a major earthquake in İzmir.
The 5.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred at 02:17 off the coast of the Marmaris district of Muğla was felt primarily in Muğla, as well as in İzmir and surrounding provinces.
According to data from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the epicenter of the tremor in the Mediterranean was off the coast of Marmaris. It was reported that 1 person lost their life following the earthquake.
"AFTERSHOCKS COULD REACH A MAGNITUDE OF 5"
Evaluating the earthquake, Geologist Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz stated that the tremor occurred on the fault line extending from Rhodes to Fethiye. Participating in a live broadcast on Habertürk, Tüysüz stated that it is possible for aftershocks reaching a magnitude of 5 to occur.
Prof. Dr. Tüysüz said, "Deep earthquakes occurring on this fault line are generally felt over very large areas. However, because they are far from the surface, they do not cause serious damage. For this reason, I do not expect the 5.8 magnitude tremor, which was felt over a wide area, to cause major destruction. However, there may be localized damage in very old buildings."
Okan Tüysüz also made statements regarding İzmir, which was heavily damaged by a 6.6 magnitude earthquake in 2020.
Stating that it is natural for the earthquake that occurred early this morning to be felt in İzmir as well, Tüysüz assessed, "Such tremors can be felt in surrounding provinces. However, this earthquake off the coast of Marmaris is not of the type that would cause a new major earthquake in İzmir. Therefore, there is no need for concern in this regard."
"THE AEGEAN REGION IS ONE OF THE MOST ACTIVE PLACES IN TERMS OF EARTHQUAKES"
Tüysüz also pointed out that the Aegean Region is one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world, saying, "Seismic activity in this region has been continuing for millions of years. In other words, such earthquakes are not surprising. However, public awareness and the structural integrity of buildings are very important in this process."
