Those living in Istanbul started the new day with a tremor. The earthquake felt in the morning hours caused short-term panic.
Following the earthquake, which was announced with different magnitudes by the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and the Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory, statements from experts came one after another.
According to AFAD data, the magnitude of the earthquake that occurred off the coast of Büyükçekmece, Istanbul, at 07:18 was recorded as 3.8. It was stated that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 6.84 kilometers.
The Kandilli Observatory announced the magnitude of the tremor as 4.1 and its depth as 13.6 kilometers.
FELT IN BEYLİKDÜZÜ, AVCILAR, AND ESENYURT
The tremor, which was felt especially in the western parts of Istanbul, caused short-term anxiety. While citizens in districts such as Beylikdüzü, Esenyurt, and Avcılar woke up to the earthquake in the morning hours, no negative incidents were reported.
STATEMENT FROM AHMET ERCAN
Making a statement on his social media account after the earthquake, Geophysical Engineer Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan called on citizens to remain calm. Ercan stated that the earthquake that occurred in the morning was an aftershock of the 6.2 magnitude earthquake on April 23.
“The M4.1 earthquake that occurred at 07:18 at a focal depth of 13 km off the coast of Kumburgaz is an aftershock of the M6.2 that occurred on April 23. There is no cause for concern,” he stated.
As will be recalled, Istanbul was shaken by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake on April 23, and citizens spent the night on the streets. Aftershocks have been continuing in the region since that day.
