Istanbul's water crisis: Mağlova Aqueduct revealed by receding waters
The drop in water levels at the Alibeyköy Dam in Istanbul has caused all the piers of the Mağlova Aqueduct, one of Mimar Sinan's masterpieces, to emerge. This situation has heightened concerns regarding the state of Istanbul's water resources and the occupancy rates of its dams.
The amount of water in Istanbul's dams is one of the most pressing concerns. Despite intermittent rainfall following a dry summer, the precipitation has not been sufficient to fill the reservoirs.
Due to the decline in water levels at the Alibeyköy Dam, one of Istanbul's key water sources, all the piers of the Mağlova Aqueduct—a work by Mimar Sinan and considered one of the masterpieces of world water architecture—have been exposed.
Occupancy rates in Istanbul's dams
Ömerli Dam 29.85
Darlık Dam 28.39
Elmalı Dam 58.28
Terkos Dam 33.47
Alibey Dam 11.34
Büyükçekmece Dam 27.91
Sazlıdere Dam 35.68
