Major crisis in the heart of tourism: Dam occupancy rates fall below critical levels

The water level in the Kutlu Aktaş Dam, which provides drinking water to the tourist district of Çeşme in İzmir, has dropped to critical levels. At the very beginning of the summer season, the occupancy rate in the dam was measured at only 13 percent.

MUNICIPALITY TAKES ACTION: NEW MEASURES IMPLEMENTED

In order to prevent the water shortage from growing, the Çeşme Municipality has put a series of new practices into effect by a decision of the Municipal Council. Serious restrictions have been imposed on water usage in both residences and businesses.

In line with the new decision, washing the front of residences and workplaces with a hose or by pouring water has been completely banned. Likewise, washing items such as carpets, rugs, and mats in areas such as balconies, gardens, and terraces has also been included in the scope of the ban until further notice.

Washing motor vehicles in all areas other than car wash businesses, that is, in gardens or in front of houses, has also been banned by municipal decision. In the statement made by the municipality, it was stated that activities that cause such water waste will be inspected.

TIME LIMIT ON GARDEN IRRIGATION

A time limit has also been imposed on garden irrigation. According to the regulation, which will be valid until September 30, 2025, garden irrigation is strictly prohibited between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM.

Citizens will only be allowed to irrigate in the early morning or late evening hours.
