Marmara earthquake warning from expert: 'Before the expected earthquake...'

While aftershocks continue following the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Istanbul on April 23, debates regarding whether a larger earthquake will occur in the Marmara region also persist. There are significant disagreements among earthquake experts on the subject.

Seismologist Ali Osman Öncel made statements on TGRT regarding the potential major Marmara earthquake.

THERE IS A RISK OF A 7.2 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE

Pointing out that the current risk in the region persists, Öncel stated, "There is currently a risk of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. However, if this risky zone breaks independently, the expected magnitude could be slightly smaller, around 6.8."

Öncel also noted that the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Silivri was lower in intensity than expected.

A LARGER ONE IS LIKELY

Stating that the expectation was for a 6.5 magnitude earthquake, Öncel warned, "We experienced a slightly smaller version before the expected earthquake. However, this does not mean that a larger earthquake will not occur. It is still likely that a larger one will happen."
