Newborn gang connection: Conversations of the doctor who killed Selen Bilgin revealed

The investigation into the death of nurse Selen Bilgin, who lost her life at the Private Birinci Hospital—which was closed as part of the case opened against the Newborn Gang on May 13, 2024—in Beylikdüzü, has been completed and a summary of proceedings has been prepared.

In the summary of proceedings prepared by the Büyükçekmece Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, Selen Bilgin's father Serkan and mother Nergül Bilgin are listed as complainants, while Fatih Akın is listed as a suspect.

The summary states that on May 13, 2024, Selen Bilgin was staying at the closed Private Birinci Hospital as an attendant for her grandfather.

It was recorded in the summary that on the day of the incident, Bilgin went to the office of Dr. Fatih Akın, an anesthesiologist working at the same hospital whom she had known previously.

The summary also states that security camera footage analysis showed Fatih Akın leaving the room one hour after Selen Bilgin entered, speaking on the phone in an agitated manner.

The summary reports that Bilgin was taken out of the room by hospital staff on a wheelchair stretcher around 07:00 in the morning. Security camera footage also captured Dr. Tevfik K. performing CPR on Bilgin, while the suspect, Dr. Fatih Akın, performed artificial respiration. Bilgin's cause of death was stated in the Forensic Medicine Institute report as "multiple drug intoxication."

In his statement, the suspect, Dr. Fatih Akın, said, “I did not give the victim any drugs. Selen Bilgin used this drug herself.”

On the other hand, Muzaffer U., who was heard as a witness regarding the incident, stated: “I called Fatih Akın on the phone. When he said, ‘We lost Selen,’ I asked, ‘What do you mean?’ He told me, ‘Selen had a headache, I gave her a painkiller serum.’ When I asked, ‘How can this happen?’ he said, ‘I gave Selen a low dose of propofol.’ As far as I know, propofol is not a drug commonly used for those suffering from insomnia. Doctor Fatih told me, ‘I first administered a painkiller, but Selen called me and said she couldn't sleep again and asked for this drug. After administering it, I waited by her side for 2-3 hours. During this time, she slept and woke up. Then I left the room. When I came back, I realized I had lost Selen. I tried to resuscitate her,’ he told me.”

The summary of proceedings states that although Fatih Akın was serving as a doctor, he did not act for treatment purposes in the occurrence of the incident and the administration of the drug that caused Selen Bilgin's death. It was requested that Akın be sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime of "intentional killing with possible intent." The prepared summary was sent to the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office for the preparation of an indictment.

CONVERSATIONS REVEALED

Meanwhile, telephone conversations Fatih Akın had with a member of the organization in the indictment prepared against the Newborn Gang have also emerged.

In a conversation where organization member Hakan Doğukan Taşçı called Fatih Akın, Taşçı is heard saying, “Doctor, I have a question. We have a baby here; the baby was discharged but later, because there was a one-day loss, we are trying to admit the patient back into intensive care, but because of the one-day loss, we cannot admit them to intensive care. I spoke with the medical accounting manager and I also spoke with Nehir; they said if Fatih doctor approves, there is no problem on our end. Can I just have the follow-up opened through an adult?” Akın asks, “We can have the follow-up opened through an adult, right?” and Taşçı replies, “I will have the follow-up opened and then deleted, doctor.”

In the conversation where Taşçı says, “The child has been wasted outside like this, to pediatric rheumatology,” it is reflected in the tape recordings that Akın replies, “I understand.” In the conversation where Taşçı says, “I spoke with the medical accounting manager, he said we will open the record through an adult and delete the follow-up, then we will switch it to newborn,” Akın is recorded as replying, “Yeah, that works, that works.”

In the conversation where Fatih Akın says, “Let's take them into intensive care; if they ask, we'll say we had to take them in as an emergency, you know? It won't be a problem, okay?” it is reflected in the tape recordings that Taşçı replies, “Okay, okay, doctor.”

Speaking about the incident, Selen Bilgin's grieving mother Nergül Bilgin said, “She was going to stay as an attendant for her grandfather in the evening. She said, ‘I am an intensive care nurse, I can take better care of my grandfather.’ In the morning, they handed me my child's dead body. Anesthesia was administered to my daughter. At first, they didn't tell us that anesthesia was administered. They told us later. The suspect doctor and my daughter were acquaintances. They had worked in the same department. He administered anesthesia to my daughter in his office. Fatih Akın, who is involved in the baby gang, killed my child with a needle, with anesthesia.”
