Radar and traffic fines on the table at AKP Central Executive Board: To be re-evaluated

At the AKP Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting, traffic fines that have sparked public debate were put on the table. The high monetary fines envisioned within the scope of the new traffic law have been taken under re-evaluation due to the increasing public backlash in recent times.

During the meeting, the social discomfort caused by inspections, primarily radar applications, was discussed in detail.

RADAR COMPLAINTS BROUGHT TO THE AGENDA

MYK members brought citizen complaints received from the field through members of parliament to the agenda. The reactions that emerged, especially with the intensification of radar controls before the holiday, drew attention. While it was emphasized that retirees and low-income segments were negatively affected by the fines, complaints from some citizens such as “My holiday bonus went to the radar” stood out.

FINES WILL BE REVIEWED

Some MYK members who took the floor at the meeting shared the view that “Just issuing fines is not the solution; the figures should be reviewed again.” It was stated that, in particular, repetitive errors and dangerous behaviors in traffic should be distinguished from one another. It was also noted that the public perception regarding radar applications needs to be corrected.

MESSAGE OF STERN PENALTIES FOR SERIOUS VIOLATIONS

While AKP officials stated that deterrence is important for ensuring traffic safety, they underscored that fines must be proportionate and fair. The assessment was made that “Of course, heavy sanctions should be applied for serious violations such as drifting, getting out of a vehicle to commit an assault, or using flashing lights. However, a one-size-fits-all penalty for every violation is not correct.”

NEW FIGURES FOR FINES: UP TO 150 THOUSAND TL

Some fine amounts included in the draft text of the new legislative proposal have also become clear. Accordingly:

For driving without a license: 40 thousand TL

For not wearing a seatbelt: 2 thousand 500 TL

For driving under the influence: Between 25 thousand TL and 150 thousand TL

For radar violations and recurring rule errors: Escalating monetary fines are envisioned.

FINAL SHAPE TO BE GIVEN TO THE LEGISLATIVE PROPOSAL

Following the evaluations brought to the agenda at the AKP MYK, it is planned to give the final shape to the new traffic law proposal.
