Reassuring statement from Şener Üşümezsoy! 'The earthquake happened and it is over'
Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy made important statements regarding the 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Istanbul. Üşümezsoy said, 'This earthquake happened and it is over; I do not see any other risk.'
Following the earthquake that caused great fear in Istanbul, Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy, who said, 'This earthquake happened and it is over; I do not see any other risk,' stated, "Despite a gap of nearly 20 km, they are bringing the Adalar fault and adding it to this fault. And when they add it, the Adalar fault has been a dead fault from the very beginning. But when they extend that fault from Yeşilköy to Zeytinburnu and Büyükçekmece, it was announced that a 50 km fault would cause a magnitude 7 earthquake."
Participating in a Habertürk broadcast, Prof. Dr. Üşümezsoy expressed the following:
"In 1999, it was speculation when everyone said the Marmara Sea had not broken from end to end since 1766, so it would first emerge from the Gulf and break from end to end. However, a major earthquake occurred in the Çınarcık basin in 1894. And if you ignore this earthquake and say there has been no earthquake since 1766, you enter into such speculation. Secondly, the fault broke in the Tekirdağ-Silivri basin in 1912, so there is a 50 km area left in the middle that did not break. That is the section between the Silivri basin and the Çınarcık basin. The fault extending from the Silivri basin to the Kumburgaz basin is 35 km long. The fault ends at Büyükçekmece.
In our studies using millimeter-scale data, we saw that in the Kumburgaz basin, the east-west trending Silivri-Kumburgaz coast thrusts onto the basin as a ridge. That is when the 5.7 magnitude earthquake occurred. The other is a fault on the edge of the Silivri basin, just west of the Kumburgaz central ridge. The two fork and cause an earthquake in the middle.
If both of these break together, they would cause a 6.5 magnitude earthquake. They were two separate faults. But despite a gap of nearly 20 km, they are bringing the Adalar fault from there and adding it to this fault. And when they add it, the Adalar fault has been a dead fault from the very beginning. But when they extend that fault from Yeşilköy to Zeytinburnu and Büyükçekmece, it was announced that a 50 km fault would cause a magnitude 7 earthquake."
