Şener Üşümezsoy comments on the Bursa earthquake: Is it a harbinger of a larger earthquake?

Turkey has been shaken by successive earthquakes in recent days. Following the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Istanbul on April 23, this time the Gemlik district of Bursa has come to the agenda with consecutive earthquakes. Most recently, another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3 was recorded in Gemlik at 13:57.

The tremors that occurred have brought the question "Is the big Istanbul earthquake approaching?" back to the public agenda.

Referring to Japanese research, Üşümezsoy stated that the fault line off the coast of Silivri-Kumburgaz has a crustal thickness of 10 kilometers and that this fault is approximately 50 kilometers long.

"THE ENERGY OF THE BIG EARTHQUAKE HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED YET"

In his assessment, Üşümezsoy stated, "If this fault line breaks in one piece, it will produce a 6.5 magnitude earthquake. However, if it breaks in two pieces, two separate earthquakes of 6.2 magnitude will occur. This corresponds to less than half of the energy of a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in total."
