Traffic fines to be increased after Eid al-Adha: Those who flee the scene of an accident, run red lights, or use fake license plates are in trouble!
A new legislative proposal expected to be discussed in Parliament after Eid al-Adha aims to reduce traffic violations and encourage drivers to be more cautious. The proposal includes not only heavy fines but also potential prison sentences for those who disregard traffic safety.
Following Eid al-Adha, one of the priority agenda items for the Grand National Assembly of Turkey will be new regulations to be made to the Highway Traffic Law.
The draft law prepared by the AKP envisions much more deterrent sanctions for drivers who threaten traffic safety.
According to the new regulation, individuals driving without a license will face a fine of 40 thousand liras. Drivers who get behind the wheel despite having their licenses confiscated temporarily or as a precautionary measure will be fined 200 thousand liras.
PRISON FOR FLEEING AN ACCIDENT
Chairman of the Justice Commission Cüneyt Yüksel stated that the proposal includes not only fines but also prison sentences in certain cases. Yüksel said, "Drivers who leave the scene of a traffic accident involving death or injury without a mandatory reason and without obtaining permission from the traffic police will face a prison sentence ranging from 1 to 3 years."
PENALTY FOR RUNNING A RED LIGHT GETS HEAVIER
With the new regulation, the fine for drivers who violate a red light is being increased to 5 thousand liras. If the same violation is repeated for a second time within a year, the fine rises to 10 thousand liras. The licenses of drivers who cause a traffic accident as a result of a red light violation will be confiscated for 60 days.
A fine of 140 thousand liras will be imposed on those using fake license plates, and 90 thousand liras on those obstructing traffic. Drivers who flee by failing to comply with the "stop" order of security forces will pay a fine of 200 thousand liras, their licenses will be confiscated for 60 days, and their vehicles will be temporarily banned from traffic.
PENALTY FOR DRUNK DRIVING WILL ALSO INCREASE
Drivers found to be under the influence of drugs will be fined 150 thousand liras and their driver's licenses will be completely revoked. The fine for driving under the influence of alcohol is being increased to 25 thousand liras.
The new draft law is expected to reduce loss of life and accidents in traffic. If approved by the General Assembly of Parliament, the regulation is planned to come into effect shortly after Eid al-Adha.
