Turkey's faith map revealed: Religiosity has declined
According to comparative data from Konda for the years 2008 and 2024, the proportion of those in Turkey who define themselves as "religious" has decreased, while the proportion of individuals who are atheist or non-believers has quadrupled.
Konda Research Company has published a striking study that reveals the change in faith trends in Turkey over time.
The updated version of the study titled "Lifestyles," originally conducted in 2008, was repeated in October 2024. According to the research, while 55 percent of society defined themselves as "religious" 16 years ago, this rate has fallen to 46 percent as of 2024.
This 9-point drop in the rate of religiosity in society indicates that the relationship younger generations have with religious identities is changing.
THE RATE OF NON-BELIEVERS HAS QUADRUPLED
One of the most striking findings of the research is the significant increase in the rate of non-belief. Compared to 2008, the proportion of individuals who define themselves as "non-believers" or "atheists" has quadrupled. Konda emphasizes that this increase is more pronounced, especially in large cities and among the young population.
“BELIEVERS WHO DO NOT WORSHIP” ARE INCREASING
Another important piece of data in the research is that the proportion of "believers who do not worship" has risen by approximately 3 points over the last 16 years. This finding reveals that religiosity is taking on a more individual structure, and that collective religious practices such as worship are beginning to be replaced by more flexible and personal forms of belief.
THE RATE OF “DEVOUT” HAS NOT CHANGED
No change was observed in the proportion of individuals who define themselves as "devout," meaning those who are strictly bound to religious rules. The rate of this group remained at the same level in 2024 as it was in 2008.
STRIKING DATA FROM THE RESEARCH
Those who say "I am religious": 55% in 2008 → 46% in 2024
Non-believer/atheist rate: Increased 4-fold compared to 2008
Believers who do not worship: 3-point increase in the last 16 years
Devout rate: Did not change, remained stable
