National skier Berkin Usta, who represented Turkey at the Beijing Winter Olympics, and his father Yahya Usta lost their lives in the fire that broke out at the Kervansaray Hotel in Uludağ. Following the fire, questions have arisen regarding why the hotel's license was not renewed and the legal processes between Zeynep Tümer and Selim Sayılgan, the owners of Kervansaray Yatırım Holding.
National skier Berkin Usta, who represented Turkey at the Beijing Winter Olympics, and his father, Yahya Usta, President of the Turkish Ski and Snowboard Instructors Association, lost their lives in a fire that broke out last night at the Kervansaray Hotel, located in Bursa's famous tourism region of Uludağ.
Following the fire, questions regarding why the hotel's license was not renewed, the legal processes between hotel owners Zeynep Tümer and Selim Sayılgan, and the cause of the fire have become a matter of public interest.
While an investigation has been launched following the fire, it has been learned that the hotel had previously been on the agenda due to various legal issues.
NATIONAL SKIER AND HIS FATHER LOST THEIR LIVES
While 2 people have lost their lives so far in the fire at the Uludağ Kervansaray Hotel, it has been learned that the victims were National Skier Berkin Usta (25), who represented Turkey at the 24th Beijing Winter Olympics, and his father Yahya Usta (57). It was also learned that Yahya Usta was the President of the Turkish Ski and Snowboard Instructors Association and a former national skier.
HOTEL LICENSE WAS NOT RENEWED
On the other hand, reports stated that the Uludağ Kervansaray Hotel had been closed by the Bursa Governorship due to deficiencies and that there were no guests staying at the hotel.
After the news of the fire, questions such as Who owns the Kervansaray Hotel? Who is the owner of the Uludağ Kervansaray Hotel? Why was the Uludağ Kervansaray Hotel's license not renewed? became a subject of curiosity.
WHO OWNS THE ULUDAĞ KERVANSARAY HOTEL?
The group, which went public with Kervansaray Yatırım Holding established in 1997, owns nearly 10 hotels in total, including the Uludağ Kervansaray Hotel. The legal process between the second-generation representatives of the holding, Zeynep Tümer and her brother Selim Sayılgan, had also been the subject of news reports. The Court of Appeal upheld the decision in the lawsuit filed by Zeynep Tümer against her brother Selim Sayılgan on the grounds that he had "hollowed out the company."
The Court of Appeal ruled that the 19-year prison sentence given to Sayılgan for three separate crimes was appropriate. Regarding the finalization of the 19-year prison sentence given to Selim Sayılgan, Zeynep Tümer said, "The decision made by the law now allows us to see our path more clearly and gives us strength in implementing the strategies we have planned.
While Selim Sayılgan was managing the company between 2013 and 2018, he lost the company's movable and immovable assets to loan sharks in an organized manner. After we took over the management in 2018, we restructured all debts and brought the company, which was struggling with foreclosures, to a clean state."
WHO IS ZEYNEP TÜMER?
Kervansaray Yatırım Holding Chairperson of the Board Zeynep Tümer is among Turkey's prominent businesswomen. Playing an active role in the restructuring process of the holding, Tümer has made a name for herself, especially with her investments in tourism and textiles.
Zeynep Tümer was born in the province of Bursa in 1962. A member of a deep-rooted family, Tümer is 63 years old.
WHY WAS THE HOTEL'S LICENSE NOT RENEWED?
The hotel's municipal license was not renewed because the simple accommodation certificate had expired and the allocation process in the National Parks had ended. An investigation has been launched into the fire at the Uludağ Kervansaray Hotel, which had been ordered to be evacuated by the court.
