CHP Deputy Chair Gamze Taşcıer reacted sharply to the cancellation of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu's diploma. In her statement, Taşcıer noted that justice and the principle of the rule of law in Turkey are being eroded more each day, stating that the country has been turned into an arena for personal ambitions and political settling of scores.
Emphasizing that the cancellation of the diplomas of 27 people, including Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and Union of Municipalities of Turkey President Ekrem İmamoğlu, by an appointed rector for unlawful and political motives is unacceptable, Taşcıer stated that this situation is a clear attempted coup against democracy, the constitution, and fundamental rights and freedoms.
"This decision, taken under the instructions of a person whose own diploma is controversial and by individuals far removed from education and merit, is a dark game played by those who want to darken our country's future," said Taşcıer, noting that the decision was made for political revenge and that the rights of individuals who completed their education through hard work are being usurped.
Stating that no political power or appointed administrator can take away people's right to education through arbitrary decisions, Gamze Taşcıer said that this decision is null and void both legally and in terms of conscience.
Emphasizing that as the Republican People's Party, they will not let this injustice go, Taşcıer noted that they will continue to fight to ensure those responsible are held accountable before the law. Taşcıer invited all segments of society who believe in democracy, justice, and merit to join the struggle to save the country from this darkness.
