Google restricts AI chatbot from answering election-related questions

Google has announced that it has decided to restrict its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, "Gemini," from answering questions about elections in certain countries where voting will take place this year.

In a statement from the Google team in India, it was noted that new regulations regarding the use of the chatbot would be introduced.

The statement emphasized that many elections will be held worldwide in 2024, and that the chatbot Gemini has been restricted from answering questions about elections in order to combat disinformation in the use of artificial intelligence.

When asked about elections, Gemini provides a response such as, "I'm still learning how to answer this question. In the meantime, try Google Search."

Google had previously apologized, stating that it was aware of inaccuracies and that the chatbot had faced criticism for generating historically inaccurate images. On February 23, it suspended the image generation feature for people in Gemini following inaccuracies in the depictions of historical figures.

On March 4, India had requested that technology firms obtain government approval before releasing AI platforms and applications that are in the testing phase to the public.
