Governor's Office announces: Feeding stray dogs in Istanbul has been banned

The Istanbul Governor's Office has announced new practices regarding stray animals in a letter sent to all district municipalities and district governorships through the Nature Conservation and National Parks Branch Directorate. The official document states that "uncontrolled feeding" will not be permitted in designated areas due to public health and safety concerns.

IN WHICH AREAS IS FEEDING BANNED?

The letter, published with the signature of Governor Davut Gül dated November 20, 2025, draws attention to the risks of pest increases and environmental pollution. In line with the decision taken by the Provincial Animal Protection Board, it was stated that uncontrolled feeding of stray dogs will not be permitted in the following areas:

• Health and educational institutions
• Airports
• Places of worship
• Parks and gardens
• Roadsides
• Playgrounds

The Governor's Office cited the prevention of increases in pest and rodent populations, the mitigation of environmental pollution, and the protection of ecological balance as the reasons for this decision. It was also stated that the aim is to reduce situations that could put the safety of citizens at risk.
