Governor's Office statement on Beşiktaş Municipality and acting mayor

The Istanbul Governor's Office has announced that the Beşiktaş Municipal Council will hold an election on January 23 to select an acting mayor to replace the detained Beşiktaş Mayor Rıza Akpolat, who has been suspended from his duties.

Following the Ministry of Interior's announcement that Beşiktaş Mayor Rıza Akpolat has been suspended from duty as a temporary measure, the Istanbul Governor's Office also issued a statement.

The statement included the following: "Beşiktaş Mayor Rıza Akpolat has been arrested by the decision of the Istanbul 6th Criminal Court of Peace dated 17.01.2025 and numbered 2025/34, due to an investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. Due to the arrest decision, Rıza Akpolat has been suspended from his duties with the approval of the Ministry of Interior, as per the Ministry of Interior's letter dated 17.01.2025 and numbered 93304. In accordance with the provisions of Article 45 of the Municipal Law No. 5393, our Governor's Office has deemed it appropriate for the Beşiktaş Municipal Council to convene at the Beşiktaş Municipality Council Meeting Hall on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 14:00 to elect an acting mayor. The election for the acting mayor will be held with the participation of the Beşiktaş Municipality Council members on the specified date and time."
