Greek Coast Guard boat violated Turkish territorial waters: 'A threat to national security'

Footage showing a Greek Coast Guard boat violating Turkish territorial waters in Bodrum has caused a major stir.

It was revealed through footage recorded by citizens that the Greek boat, which was pursuing a vessel off the coast of Bodrum, advanced as far as Akçabük Bay.

'THE LATEST EXAMPLE OF HARM TO OUR NATIONAL SECURITY'

CHP Deputy Chairman Yankı Bağcıoğlu made a statement regarding the incident that took place on September 20, 2024.

Bağcıoğlu stated, “The incident of the Greek Coast Guard boat violating our territorial waters is the latest example of the harm caused to our national security by the changes made in haste after the July 15 coup attempt.”

Bağcıoğlu emphasized that weakening the ties between the Naval Forces Command and the Coast Guard Command would destroy the unity of doctrine and understanding.

COORDINATION AND COOPERATION ARE IMPORTANT

In his statement, Bağcıoğlu said, “Our Naval Forces and Coast Guard Commands are like 'flesh and nail' in protecting our maritime rights, interests, and concerns,” drawing attention to the importance of these elements working together for national security.

Bağcıoğlu expressed that the changes made to the Coast Guard Command Law No. 2692 and the Gendarmerie Organization, Duties, and Powers Law No. 2803 could negatively affect joint operations, especially during times of crisis.

'URGENT CHANGES ARE NEEDED'

Stating that the latest incident is an alarm bell for national security, Bağcıoğlu emphasized that the Coast Guard and Gendarmerie elements to be placed under the command of the relevant force command in the event of mobilization and war must be determined.

Bağcıoğlu added that continuous information flow between the Naval Forces and the Coast Guard Command in the operational area must be ensured and cooperation must be increased, and that urgent changes must be made to strengthen training and doctrines in this regard.
