Gültan Kışanak released after 7.5 years
Former Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Gültan Kışanak, who was granted a release order in the Kobani Case, has been released from Kandıra Prison, where she had been held for 7.5 years.
The verdict was announced today in the Kobani case, in which 108 defendants, including former HDP Co-Chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, were tried in connection with the Kobani protests of October 6-8, 2014.
The Ankara 22nd High Criminal Court sentenced Demirtaş to a total of 42 years in prison and Yüksekdağ to 30 years and 3 months.
The court sentenced Sebahat Tuncel to 12 years in prison for "membership in a terrorist organization" and Ayla Akat Ata to 9 years and 9 months for the same charge, while ordering the release of both individuals.
The court sentenced Gültan Kışanak, who has been in prison for 7 years and had completed her maximum detention period 6 months ago, to 12 years in prison for "membership in a terrorist organization," but ordered her release taking into account the time she spent in detention.
Kışanak, who was arrested on October 30, 2016, along with DBP Council Member Fırat Anlı, was released from Kandıra No. 1 F-Type Closed Prison, where she had been held for over 7 years, following the warrant issued after the verdict.
