Hakan Fidan warns 'peace process is fragile' for Gaza: 'Tends to be short-lived...'

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan delivered a speech at the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in Johannesburg, South Africa. Stating that steps must be taken with renewed determination to maintain the G20's flexibility and relevance, Fidan expressed the need for a more inclusive global governance system to protect international peace and security. Fidan stated that developing economies and regional actors should be more involved in decision-making processes.

Stating that the G20 should remain the primary forum for international economic cooperation, Fidan said the following:

''Peace cannot be lasting unless it is supported by economic development and prosperity. In Syria, in Gaza, and in many other parts of the world, peace is extremely fragile. Unless we offer genuine perspectives for economic recovery and development initiatives for these regions, they tend to be short-lived.''

Fidan also touched upon the importance of strengthening cooperation between the G20 and regional organizations such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, ASEAN, and the African Union. The Foreign Minister stated that connectivity should be promoted through regional economic corridors, particularly in Central Asia, the Caucasus, and the Middle East. He emphasized that the Trans-Caspian Middle Corridor and the Development Road Project are important examples of this vision.

CALLED FOR GLOBAL COOPERATION

Underlining that fair burden-sharing should be encouraged in addressing migration and refugee crises, Fidan argued that countries hosting refugees should be supported with sustainable frameworks. Fidan pointed out the need for better coordination in global efforts to address food security, inflation, and supply chain disruptions.

Reminding that peace processes in fragile regions must be supported by economic development and prosperity, Fidan stated:

''The G20 can be more effective in shaping a more stable global order by recognizing the link between geoeconomics and geopolitics. We can use economic diplomacy channels to build bridges across geopolitical divisions and overcome these divisions. In this context, increasing the G20's role as a geoeconomic stabilizer should be encouraged. As Turkey, we are ready to contribute to this vision.''
