Hakan Fidan: 'We do not want to face off with Israel in Syria!'

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan gave an interview to the Reuters news agency in Brussels, where he traveled for the NATO Foreign Ministers Summit.

Pointing out that Turkey does not want to face off with Israel in Syria, Fidan noted that the steps Israel is taking in Syria are paving the way for potential future instability.

Emphasizing that if the new administration in Damascus wishes to have "certain agreements" with Israel, that would be their own choice, Fidan stated that Israel, just like Turkey, is a neighbor of Syria.

When asked about US President Trump's threats toward Iran, Minister Fidan expressed that diplomacy is necessary for resolving the conflict between the two countries and that they do not want any attack to be carried out against Iran.

'S-400 SANCTIONS MUST BE CORRECTED'

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also touched upon the Russia-Ukraine War and sanctions in his interview with Reuters.

Stating that "Russia and Ukraine are currently a bit far from reaching a peace agreement," Fidan said, "We welcome the US efforts to end the Ukraine war, but reaching an agreement is not easy. It is extremely difficult for the parties to digest any peace agreement, but it is better than more death."

On the other hand, emphasizing that the sanctions the US has imposed on Turkey due to Russian missiles are an "anomaly" that needs to be corrected, Minister Fidan stated, "A deterrence factor is necessary to prevent the war from restarting." He said that US President Donald Trump could find a solution to the sanctions the US has imposed on Turkey over the Russian missiles.
