Happened in Istanbul: New development regarding the penalty given to a police officer who changed her trousers because she was menstruating

In Istanbul, a report was filed and a penalty was issued against a female police officer who wore civilian trousers because she was menstruating while on duty. However, this penalty was overturned by the judiciary.

The female police officer was on duty at a security checkpoint at Vodafone Park Stadium. When she went to the restroom, she realized she was menstruating and that her trousers were stained. She put on a pair of civilian trousers she had brought with her, returned to her post, and wore her police identification vest over them.

When the male commissioner on duty asked why she was wearing civilian trousers, the female police officer replied, "I spilled ayran on my trousers." For this reason, she received a 4-day salary deduction penalty on the grounds of "not wearing the uniform except in permitted circumstances."

THE PENALTY IS NOT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LAW

According to the report by Cihan Başakçıoğlu from Gazete Duvar, the female police officer appealed the penalty and took the matter to court. In her statement to the court, she indicated that she could not openly say she was menstruating.

The Istanbul 7th Administrative Court decided that the penalty issued was not in accordance with the law.

The court stated that the officer had arrived at her post in her official uniform and changed her trousers afterward, emphasized that the incident had not been sufficiently investigated, and ruled for the cancellation of the penalty.
