He explained his professional problems in his final messages: A police officer died by suicide in İzmir
Police officer Murat Baş, who was serving in İzmir, ended his life due to the injustices he faced. Explaining the reasons for his decision in a message sent via WhatsApp before his suicide, Baş drew attention to the professional problems he was experiencing.
Murat Baş, a police officer serving in İzmir, has died by suicide. Before taking his own life, Baş explained the problems he faced in his profession in a message sent via WhatsApp. Police officer Murat Baş, who was stationed in the Konak district of İzmir, detailed the issues he was experiencing in a message sent via the WhatsApp application before his suicide. Baş stated that he was being forced into a second term of duty in the eastern provinces (şark görevi) and that his well-deserved retirement had been blocked.
Sharing Baş's final message, CHP MP Murat Bakan said, 'There is a ministry that views police suicides as a natural consequence of this profession, but they neither want to talk about nor solve the problems of police officers.'
In his final message, Baş included the following statements:
'I always followed the rules, but those who govern the state did not. For months, I waited until the very last moment, thinking that perhaps a circular would be issued, I could retire, and I could get rid of this cursed eastern assignment. We have always been governed by Ministers of Interior who have never been of any benefit to their civil servants. The irregularity of working conditions, constant arbitrary extra duties, endless shifts...'
Republican People's Party (CHP) İzmir MP Murat Bakan, who shared Baş's suicide message on his social media account, also stated that he has repeatedly brought police suicides to the agenda of the Parliament and submitted parliamentary research motions, but that his motions have been rejected by the government every time.
MURAT BAKAN DREW ATTENTION TO THE MINISTRY'S ATTITUDE
In a post on his X account, Bakan wrote the following:
'Another brother of ours, a police officer, has ended his life. For the Ministry of Interior, M. B., who ended his life, is just a number, a statistic; they do not care if he had a mother, a father, a spouse, or children, or what they are feeling. I am a member of parliament who has repeatedly brought police suicides to the agenda in the TBMM for 9 years and submitted parliamentary research motions. My motions were rejected by the votes of the ruling party every time. To them, police are valuable when they are martyrs, but they have no value while they are alive. The person who shamelessly asked for my last motion to be rejected was a former police chief. There is a ministry that views police suicides as a natural consequence of this profession, but they neither want to talk about nor solve the problems of police officers. A system can be established where no police officer ends their life, where they live humanely, feel valued, retire, and see their children get married; we will establish it.'
