The President of Religious Affairs, Ali Erbaş, who has surpassed many ministries with his budget and luxury expenditures, his official vehicles, the 1,404 TL rent he pays for his residence, and most recently his remarks that 'fitra can be given to retirees' has had his retirement benefits calculated.

According to the report by Deniz Ayhan from Sözcü, Erbaş will become a 'super retiree'.

Having completed 40 years in his profession, President of Religious Affairs Erbaş would receive a pension of 87,000 TL if he were to retire this year. Born in 1961, the 64-year-old Erbaş would also be paid a retirement bonus of 2 million lira. Erbaş, who will turn 65 next year, would see his salary and bonus increase further due to coefficient adjustments if he continues in his post until September 2026 and then retires. Erbaş, who has traveled to 45 countries in 8 years, most recently visited Malaysia, Indonesia, and Pakistan. Erbaş, who currently resides in a triplex residence in Ankara for which he pays 1,404 lira in rent, also has his water, electricity, natural gas, and telephone expenses covered by the state. Meanwhile, tens of thousands are struggling to survive on the lowest pension of 14,469 lira. 

1,404 LIRA VILLA

The rent for triplex villas in the Bilkent district of Ankara, where Erbaş's villa is located—a man who frequently uses the phrase, 'We are the followers of a Prophet who said, "He is not one of us who goes to sleep with a full stomach while his neighbor is hungry"'—starts at 100,000 lira. These villas are sold for 40 million lira. The Presidency of Religious Affairs had issued a fatwa stating that fitra, which should be given to poor Muslims, could also be given to retirees and minimum wage earners. The fatwa stated, 'If you think that someone receiving a minimum wage or a pension during the month of Ramadan cannot make ends meet, you can give them your fitra.' Following this fatwa, retirees remarked, 'We used to give fitra, now we have become in need of fitra.' Some time ago, Erbaş had also leased an Audi A8 official vehicle, but after the backlash, he took a step back and said, 'They begrudged me an Audi.'

Erbaş, who has been serving as the President of Religious Affairs since 2017, is set to become the longest-serving president in the institution's history. Drawing attention with his travels, which have exceeded 100 in number, Erbaş was in Indonesia yesterday, where he accompanied President Erdoğan and signed a memorandum of understanding with the Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar.
