He issued a warning for Sındırgı with the words 'it has no equal': Unprecedented
In the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir, nearly 18,000 tremors have been recorded in 3 months following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred on August 10. Two of these were 6.1, and approximately 80 were above 4.
Gazi University faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bülent Özmen commented on the extraordinary activity in the region.
Stating that residents in Sındırgı have been feeling constant tremors for three months, Özmen said, "This is an extraordinary process, and extraordinary measures must be taken."
Bülent Özmen stated that data such as radon gas, groundwater levels, and magnetic field changes in the region should be monitored in real-time, noting that these parameters would help in understanding the course of the earthquake activity.
Reminding that AFAD has declared the region a Disaster Area Affecting General Life, Özmen emphasized that if necessary, 'disaster-prone area' or 'state of emergency' practices could also be evaluated.
RISK OF A MAGNITUDE 7 EARTHQUAKE
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bülent Özmen reminded that the Simav Fault Zone and the Gelenbe Fault have the potential to produce earthquakes reaching a magnitude of 7: "To release the energy of a magnitude 7 earthquake, 31 tremors of magnitude 6 are needed. So far, only two major tremors have occurred in Sındırgı."
