He murdered the woman he was with: 'Good conduct' reduction granted!

Defendant Ege Rüştü Akoğlu, who was on trial for the murder of his girlfriend Beyza Nur Kaya in Ankara's Keçiören district, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a 'good conduct' reduction for the crime of "intentional killing of a woman," and an additional 1 year and 3 months in prison for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The hearing at the Ankara 33rd High Criminal Court was attended by the detained defendant Akoğlu, the lawyers for both parties, and Beyza Nur Kaya's mother, Nesrin Kaya, and sister, Betül Sena Kaya.

During today's session of the trial, the statements of the defendant, the complainants, and the lawyers for both parties regarding the prosecutor's final opinion were heard.

Complainant Nesrin Kaya stated, "May God never let anyone experience the pain of losing a child. She was a child I used to tuck in with a quilt. Now she is in the dark earth. This pain of ours will never end. Give him the heaviest sentence possible."

Complainant Betül Sena Kaya also demanded that the defendant be punished in the harshest possible way.

In his defense, the defendant Akoğlu said that he and Beyza Nur Kaya, whom he had known since high school, had been in a relationship for the last 2 years.

Stating that they could not see each other often because they lived in Çankırı, Akoğlu claimed, "Beyza was very angry because of this. She was insulting me and my family. I was taking the high road so that Beyza wouldn't make a scene."

Akoğlu alleged that Kaya had sent him a message saying, "You don't make time for me. Let's break up," and continued, "I said 'okay.' After a while, I went to Ankara with my friend. Meanwhile, Beyza messaged me and asked if I was coming to Ankara. I said I would. She told me, 'Let me know when you arrive so we can talk about the breakup issue.' I said, 'We'll see.' Then I told her I would be at home."

Explaining that the doorbell rang while he was oiling his gun, which had been jamming, Akoğlu continued his defense as follows:

"I realized it was Beyza. I didn't open the door. Upon this, she called me on the phone and started insulting and swearing, saying 'why aren't you opening it?' I opened the door so the situation wouldn't escalate. I left the gun on top of the radiator. Beyza seemed like she wasn't herself. She was constantly insulting and swearing. I asked Beyza to leave the house. She made a move to grab the gun. I made a move to stop her. During this, the gun went off, and Beyza fell to the ground."

Stating that he called emergency services after the incident and asked for help from his neighbors, Akoğlu claimed that he did not act with the intent to kill and that the incident was an accident.
