According to the statement made by the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the earthquake, which took place at 19:53, had a depth of approximately 11 kilometers below the surface. In a statement he made on July 16, Üşümezsoy emphasized that focus should be placed on Balıkesir instead of the "Great Istanbul earthquake." Furthermore, he drew attention to the Sarıköy Fault, stating that this region carries a high risk of a major earthquake.

Stating that there has been stress accumulation on this line following the 1953 Yenice-Gönen earthquake, Üşümezsoy had expressed that Southern Marmara is under a significant earthquake threat. Specifically pointing to the Gönen-Yenice line, Üşümezsoy had stated that the probability of a major earthquake in this region was quite high.
