He said 'it is not suitable for May 1st': DİSK's response to Ali Yerlikaya regarding Taksim
Following Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya's announcement banning Taksim Square for May 1st, DİSK issued a statement reiterating its call to 'be in Taksim on May 1st' by sharing the Constitutional Court's ruling.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that Taksim Square is not among the designated rally areas for May 1st, declaring, "Taksim is not suitable for May 1st."
A response came from the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK) following Yerlikaya's 'ban' announcement.
In the statement, which recalled the Constitutional Court's (AYM) ruling dated October 12, 2023, it was stated: "Every person who considers themselves a part of that culture has the right to be there on May 1st to directly experience the meaning that Taksim Square represents and to pass on that experience through generations. Because May 1st is identified with Taksim Square, restricting the aforementioned venue also results in the restriction of the thought intended to be conveyed."
The post included the following section of the AYM ruling:
"... Taksim Square, which is one of the cornerstones of labor and trade union culture, demonstrates not only the solidarity of those present there on May 1st but also the existence of the collective memory of the laborers. In this case, every person who considers themselves a part of that culture has the right to be there on May 1st to directly experience the meaning that Taksim Square represents and to pass on that experience through generations. Because May 1st is identified with Taksim Square, restricting the aforementioned venue also results in the restriction of the thought intended to be conveyed."
"Every person who considers themselves a part of that culture HAS THE RIGHT TO BE THERE on #May1st to directly experience the meaning that Taksim Square represents and to pass on that experience through generations!"
