He stole a child's phone by asking for the time

Antalya’s Manavgat district saw a suspect who snatched an 11-year-old child's phone from their hand and fled caught by gendarmerie teams following a pursuit.

The 18-year-old suspect, who was determined to have 4 prior criminal records for blackmail and the unlawful dissemination of personal data, was handed over to police teams by the gendarmerie.

The incident occurred on Antalya Street. According to the information received, a small child running toward Hisar Street pointed at a person running ahead and shouted, 'He stole my phone, catch him.' Upon hearing this, a team from the Manavgat District Gendarmerie Command's Central Gendarmerie Station, who were on their way to duty, caught the suspect at Republic Square (Cumhuriyet Meydanı) after a chase.

The mobile phone, which the suspect had thrown while fleeing, was found at the pedestrian crossing between the old district governor's building and Republic Square.

The individual, who was brought to the Central Gendarmerie Station by gendarmerie teams and identified as Ahmet A., was handed over to teams from the Manavgat District Police Department.

It was determined that the suspect had 4 separate criminal records, 3 of which were for the unlawful dissemination of personal data and 1 for blackmail.

''HE SUDDENLY TOOK THE PHONE FROM MY HAND''

Stating that he was looking at something on his phone while on his way to school, 6th-grade student at Çağlayan Middle School Kerem Talha Ateş (11) said, “The person who came up to me asked what time it was. After walking with me to the corner, he suddenly took the phone from my hand and started running away. I shouted. Thank goodness the gendarmerie officers caught him and retrieved my phone.”
