He was attacked while demolishing illegal cafes in Üsküdar: Who is Ramazan Gülten? Why was he detained?

As part of the investigation conducted into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, detention warrants were issued for 53 people this morning, and 47 individuals have been taken into custody. This operation specifically targets the İBB's İSKİ, zoning, and urban planning departments.

HE HAD BEEN ATTACKED

Among those detained is İBB Zoning Director Ramazan Gülten, who made headlines in 2023 after being attacked during the demolition of illegal cafes on the Üsküdar waterfront. At the time, images of Gülten with his face covered in blood caused a widespread public outcry.

WHO IS RAMAZAN GÜLTEN?

Born on July 18, 1982, Ramazan Gülten completed his primary, secondary, and high school education in Karaman. He successfully concluded his academic life by graduating from the Department of City and Regional Planning at Yıldız Technical University in 2006. After graduation, Gülten began his career as a city planner in the private sector, and served as a city planner at the Üsküdar Municipality between 2007 and 2008, and at the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality between 2009 and 2017.

Gülten, who spearheaded significant projects as the Zoning and Urban Planning Director at the Çanakkale Kepez Municipality between 2017 and 2019, also took an active role in professional organization activities. While serving in various management levels at the TMMOB Chamber of City Planners Bursa Branch since 2012, he assumed the role of Çanakkale Provincial Representative in 2018.
