Historic structure at Hagia Sophia damaged! They installed shutters
The new visitor entrance gate constructed for foreign tourists at the Hagia Sophia Mosque has drawn attention for its incompatibility with the historic structure's architecture. Public and political backlash against the gate continues.
The "visitor management plan" implemented for Hagia Sophia upon UNESCO's recommendation begins today.
As part of the initiative launched to separate those arriving for worship from tourists visiting the historic site, foreign tourists will enter the mosque starting today with a 25-euro ticket.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in its statement regarding the matter, noted that foreign tourists would purchase tickets from the booth positioned opposite the Fountain of Ahmed III and enter through the ramp located under the Bayezid II minaret on the southern facade of the mosque.
THE GATE THAT DREW REACTION
Within the scope of the new arrangement, the entrance gate built under this minaret caused reactions on social media due to its 'incompatibility with the architecture of the historic structure'.
Many people pointed out that the entrance gate, made with modern materials and bearing the inscription "Ayasofya-i Camii Kebir-i Şerifi Ziyaret Alanı-Visiting Area," is incompatible with the texture of the historic structure. In the photographs, it was seen that the gate opens and closes with a shutter system used in shops.
While one user shared the photo of the entrance gate prepared for foreign tourists with the criticism "Hagia Sophia Shopping Mall, goods acceptance entrance," many users commented, "An example of vandalism that hurts the eyes."
"A TEMPORARY GATE"
Commenting on the images reflected from Hagia Sophia, Prof. Dr. Hasan Fırat Diker, a faculty member at the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University Faculty of Architecture and Design, who is known for his book "Hagia Sophia and Its Repairs," also made a comment on his social media account. Prof. Dr. Diker stated, "This gate is a temporary structure. It will be removed once the restoration of the minaret above it is completed. It was built as a safety measure because visitors heading to the gallery floor will pass under the minaret scaffolding" they shared the information.
