Hospital report released: Son of Abdüllatif Şener, who killed his grandmother, arrested

The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has completed its investigation into the son of Abdüllatif Şener, who killed his grandmother after holding her hostage, and referred Bedirhan Şener—who was alleged to be mentally unstable—to court with a request for his arrest. Bedirhan Şener was arrested by the court.

Hospital report released: Son of Abdüllatif Şener, who killed his grandmother, arrested

Bedirhan Şener, the son of former Deputy Prime Minister and former CHP Konya MP Abdüllatif Şener—one of the founders of the AKP—and a deputy chief of staff at the Turkish Grand National Assembly, was taken to the High-Security Forensic Psychiatry Hospital at Bilkent City Hospital and kept under observation for approximately 3 weeks after killing his 80-year-old grandmother, Leyla Çetiner, on the night of July 31. 

The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had launched an investigation into Bedirhan Şener for the crimes of "Intentional Killing," "Attempted Intentional Killing," "Violation of Law No. 6136," and "Property Damage." 

NO MENTAL ILLNESS OR IMPAIRMENT FOUND

According to the statement made by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the report issued by Bilkent City Hospital on August 29 stated: "It has been determined that the suspect, who was placed under observation in accordance with Article 74 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CMK), does not suffer from any mental illness or impairment of a nature or severity that would affect his criminal responsibility, and that he is capable of perceiving the legal meaning and consequences of the act he allegedly committed on 31/07/2024, namely 'intentional killing and attempted intentional killing of an ascendant with a firearm,' and that he has full capacity to direct his behavior regarding this act." The report noted that the suspect could not be evaluated under the articles of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK 32/1-2) related to "mental health."

Following the report, the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office announced that Bedirhan Şener had been referred to court with a request for his arrest on charges of "Intentional Killing of an Ascendant" and "Attempted Intentional Killing of an Ascendant." After his interrogation, Bedirhan Şener was arrested by the 10th Criminal Judgeship of Peace. 

WHAT HAPPENED?

In the incident that took place on July 31, Bedirhan Şener, who had an argument with his grandmother for an as-yet-unknown reason, shot and killed her with a firearm.

Police dispatched to the scene took Bedirhan Şener into custody, and he was referred to the High-Security Forensic Psychiatry Hospital at Bilkent City Hospital to determine whether he was mentally sound.
