Hotel's 'couples-only' policy! Friends' reservation cancelled: Fine imposed

In Alanya, a reservation made by two male friends for a vacation was cancelled due to the hotel's "couples-only" policy. In the statement made by the hotel, it was stated that the reservation was cancelled on the grounds that the male quota was full and it was not possible for two men to stay in the same room.

FINE IMPOSED

According to the report in T24; TİHEK, which determined that the hotel's defense was based on assumptions and prejudices, concluded that this practice was not based on any objective and reasonable justification. For this reason, an administrative fine of 141 thousand 934 TL was imposed on the business.

The fact that the Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey (TİHEK) imposes maximum fines on hotels that do not allow single men or two men to stay in the same room has not changed the "couples-only" practice. 

VICTIMIZED FRIENDS APPLIED TO TİHEK

Two male friends who paid and made a reservation to vacation in Alanya learned that their reservation was cancelled on the grounds that the male quota at the hotel was full and it was not possible for two men to stay in the same room. Stating that they were victimized, the male friends applied to TİHEK. 

The lawyer for the hotel, from which TİHEK requested a defense, stated that social conditions should be taken into account and argued that a system similar to the "no entry without a partner" rule applied in some venues was being implemented.

The hotel management stated that such a practice was preferred against the possibility of male groups participating in alcoholic entertainment and engaging in behaviors that might disturb other guests. 

FINE FROM TİHEK TO THAT HOTEL

TİHEK evaluated the application and ruled that the hotel's attitude constituted discrimination. After examining the documents and phone records submitted by M.E.L., whose reservation was cancelled, it was determined that the practice violated the prohibition of discrimination against men.

Determining that the hotel's defense was based on assumptions and prejudices, TİHEK concluded that this practice was not based on any objective and reasonable justification, and imposed an administrative fine of 141 thousand 934 TL on the business.
