Rainy and cool weather is increasing its impact in Istanbul. According to data from the General Directorate of Meteorology, the downpour in the city is expected to intensify starting from 18:00 and decrease in intensity after midnight.
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) also reported that, along with storms, severe rainfall may be seen in some areas until Sunday morning. Regions under warning include Arnavutköy, Eyüpsultan, Sarıyer, Şişli, Beşiktaş, Fatih, and the Bosphorus area on the European Side.
According to AKOM's forecasts, rainfall is expected to be more intense across the Anatolian Side. It is predicted that 50 to 100 kilograms of precipitation per square meter could fall in this region, while the amount of rainfall in other parts of the city is expected to be in the range of 20 to 50 kilograms per square meter.
MOST RISKY TIME INTERVAL
NTV Meteorology Editor Dilek Çalışkan also drew attention to the hours between 18:00 and 00:00 for Istanbul. Çalışkan stated, "The risk is higher on the Anatolian Side. On the European Side, it will be effective along the Bosphorus Line."
While it was stated that the rainfall could be stronger around Şile, Sancaktepe, and Maltepe on the Anatolian Side, it was noted that the downpour would be effective over a wide area. Strong rainfall is also expected in some places in the northern districts of the city, including Arnavutköy, Eyüpsultan, Sarıyer, Beykoz, and Şile.
Pointing out that the rainfall exceeding 200 kilograms per square meter during the flood disaster on Wednesday was an extreme situation, Çalışkan said that today's rainfall remaining above 50 kilograms also poses a risk for Istanbul.
Stating that warnings continue for the Marmara Region, Çalışkan conveyed that the most intense hours in Kocaeli and Sakarya would be during the night. While the rainfall is expected to largely cease on Sunday, it was emphasized that caution should be exercised against the risk of landslides due to the soil being saturated with water.
