House arrest order for Furkan Karabay lifted

The house arrest of journalist Furkan Karabay, who was detained on January 23 on charges of "publicly spreading misleading information" and released under judicial control in the form of house arrest, has been lifted.

The statement from the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the matter is as follows:

"Within the scope of the judicial investigation being conducted by our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it has been decided to lift the judicial control measure for the suspect, whose identity and alleged crime are specified below, as a decision is about to be reached within the scope of the file."

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

Furkan Karabay was detained at 00:30 on the night connecting January 22 to January 23 on charges of "publicly spreading misleading information" within the scope of the IMM (Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality) investigation. Karabay's lawyer, Enes Ermaner, announced on his social media account X that Karabay had been detained:

"Journalist Furkan Karabay has been detained within the scope of the IMM investigation on charges of publicly spreading misleading information in accordance with Article 217/A of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK)."

Karabay, whose statement was not taken at the police station, was referred to the prosecutor's office on January 23. The prosecutor's office accused Karabay of "publicly spreading misleading information" based on two of his news reports.

The prosecutor's office referred Karabay to the court with a request for his arrest. In the referral document, in addition to the charge of "publicly spreading misleading information," the prosecutor's office also leveled the charge of "targeting individuals involved in the fight against terrorism" against Karabay.

The court decided to impose a travel ban on Furkan Karabay regarding the charge of "publicly spreading misleading information," and placed him under judicial control by means of house arrest regarding the charge of "targeting individuals involved in the fight against terrorism."
