How did International Women's Day on March 8 emerge?

March 8, the special day we celebrate as International Women's Day, might actually be more accurately called "International Working Women's Day" because the origins of this day were first ignited by socialist female workers. This special day, which voices demands for women's rights, began to be commemorated on March 8 following women's uprisings and impactful events dating back to the 1800s.

Today, women all over the world come together to voice their demands for equality in social life, to ensure gender equality, and to draw attention to women's rights. For this purpose, various events are organized; slogans are chanted, marches are held, dances are performed, seminars are arranged, or messages of support are sent to one another on social media platforms.

Unfortunately, we still have a long way to go for women to reach a more equal position in social life. However, it is important to remember that all rights achieved were won through women uniting and struggling together.

It was the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period when women, in particular, were working in dangerous factories for low wages. During this process, women came together to fight for rights such as labor rights and the right to vote.

"The International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union" became one of the largest unions to voice the concerns of female workers, and men also joined this union. However, although the participation of working-class women in unions was difficult due to various reasons such as class and race struggles, the interests of women fighting for labor rights and human rights in the early 20th century overlapped with the interests of middle-class feminists who focused primarily on achieving equality with male employees.

During this period, women working in industrial areas performed their jobs under difficult conditions and received lower wages than men doing the same work. Under these conditions, a fire that broke out in a shirt factory in 1911 became a major turning point. While many women lost their lives in the fire, awareness regarding the conditions and rights of female workers increased following this event, giving momentum to International Women's Day activities.

As years passed, International Women's Day on March 8 continued to be celebrated worldwide and became an important symbol in the struggle for women's rights.
