Sonora Smart Dodd, the daughter of an American Civil War veteran, thought that fathers should also have a day like Mother's Day. She began efforts to have June 5, her father's birthday, declared Father's Day, but these efforts could not be completed by that date, and the celebrations were postponed to the third Sunday of June.
Father's Day was first celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. In 1924, United States President Calvin Coolidge supported the celebrations but did not officially declare it Father's Day.
