In a speech at an event he attended, AKP MP Hulusi Akar stated that the purpose of education is the fear of God and shame before others, and used the following expressions: "Children between the ages of 4 and 12 must be instilled with the fear of God, shame before others, and a love for their homeland, nation, and flag; if these values are not provided, will you then be dealing with atheists, deists, or the LGBT?"

Akar's statements are as follows:

"The purpose of education is not to acquire knowledge. The purpose of education is, first, the fear of God, and second, shame before others. If we give people, our children between the ages of 4 and 12, the fear of God, if we give them the fear of God and shame before others, sir, if we give them the love of homeland, the love of nation, the love of flag, if we teach them to do good for others and instill our other national and spiritual values in them, then no matter where this child goes, no matter where they go in the world, do not fear for this child.

If this is not provided—and as is well known, we have some problems in education—the picture we see is what happens. Then will you be dealing with atheists or deists? Will you be dealing with the LGBT? Will you be dealing with drugs? You will be bewildered, you will be bewildered.

Then we start asking, sir, where is the prosecutor? Where is the police? Friends, this cannot be solved with prosecutors and police. The beginning of the matter, the remedy, is education. We must provide this; if we cannot, our own children become alienated from us, our own grandchildren become alienated from us."
