İlber Ortaylı explains why he attended the Minguzzi hearing: 'Standing with the grieving family...'

The 5th hearing was held in the case regarding the death of Mattia Ahmet Minguzzi, the son of Italian chef Andrea Minguzzi and cellist Yasemin Akıncılar, who was fatally stabbed at a flea market he visited to shop in Kadıköy.

With the merger of the main case file involving 2 defendants and the file of 2 other defendants who were subsequently arrested and indicted, a total of 4 defendants were tried together for the first time today.

The hearing was adjourned to October 21. İlber Ortaylı's attendance at the hearing in a wheelchair to support the Minguzzi family had become a topic of public discussion. Ortaylı shared a post on his social media account regarding the matter.

İlber Ortaylı's social media post is as follows:

"Despite being tired on the day of the court hearing and subsequently ending up in the hospital, as you all know, I followed this case. I will write in detail about my views regarding the case of Ahmet Minguzzi, who is a child to all of us, next week.

Some issues must absolutely be discussed, debated, and kept on the agenda. I need to say this much; I followed the hearing on-site, and I will continue to do so.

I was there that day as a father, a university professor, and a citizen. People ask why I went. To show that I am standing with the grieving family...

So that another one of our children does not experience what happened to our child Ahmet Minguzzi tomorrow... We must remain united as we were yesterday, and we must always stand by the families."
