Imamoglu's 'Pepe' post: He lived a life the exact opposite of power-hungry, ambitious, and corrupt politicians

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who is currently detained in Silivri, shared a message for the late former President of Uruguay, Jose Mujica (Pepe). Imamoglu included footage of himself with Mujica from his 2015 visit to Istanbul in his post.

Known popularly as "Pepe," former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica has passed away at the age of 89. Mujica was laid to rest today in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay.

In 2015, Mujica came to Turkey at the invitation of the CHP regarding a book written about him. Imamoglu, who was among those who welcomed Mujica on behalf of the CHP, added a video containing footage from that day to his post.

IN DEFIANCE OF THOSE WHO SAY 'THERE IS NO SAVING ON REPUTATION'...

Imamoglu included the following statements in his farewell message:

“Pepe” has left us. The historical conscience of humanity has lost a great monument today. José Alberto Mujica Cordano, who served as the President of Uruguay between 2010 and 2015, was a beautiful human being who set an example for all of humanity with his life, morality, and conscience.

He lived a life the exact opposite of power-hungry, ambitious, and corrupt politicians. Yet, he never compromised his reputation. In defiance of those who say “there is no saving on reputation,” he taught the whole world what true reputation is.

Because for him, reputation was not found in the multi-room palaces he could have had built, but in living in his modest shack. He established his power not on the magnificent thrones of palaces, but in the hearts of the oppressed, primarily in Uruguay and across all of Latin America and the world.

He became an inspiring, tremendous example to the whole world of how a conscientious, moral, and just head of state should live. Goodbye, Pepe… It was a great honor for me to meet you. Rest in peace."
