‘İmamoğlu’ rift between AKP and the Palace
Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz argued that the March 19 operation, in which Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was arrested, did not have an impact on the economy 'in and of itself.' Meanwhile, AKP member Nihat Zeybekci had stated in a program he attended recently, 'The March 19 process naturally harmed the economy. It is out of the question to say it did not.'
As part of the investigation launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office on March 19 on charges of corruption and terrorism, İBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was arrested on March 23 and sent to Silivri Prison.
While successive operations against the İBB continue, the process in which İmamoğlu was detained and arrested had a negative impact on the economy, and the Central Bank's (TCMB) direct intervention in the markets to suppress the skyrocketing exchange rate exceeded 55 billion dollars.
ZEYBEKCİ: MARCH 19 HARMED THE ECONOMY
The effects of the March 19 operation on the economy have divided the AKP and the Palace. AKP Deputy Chairman and Head of Economic Affairs Nihat Zeybekci, regarding the process in which İmamoğlu was detained and arrested, made the assessment: "The March 19 process naturally harmed the economy. It is out of the question to say it did not. Harming the economy takes time. The results of an event that happens today emerge over 6-month, 1-year, or 2-year periods. But regarding financial markets, we can certainly say that the process harmed Turkey."
YILMAZ: IT DID NOT HAVE AN IMPACT IN AND OF ITSELF
However, a contrary statement came from the Palace. Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, in response to a question directed at him regarding the economic impact of the March 19 process, replied: "It did not have an impact on the economy in and of itself."
