İmamoğlu shares his 'espionage case' speech: The greatest opposition struggle for democracy and justice
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has shared his speech from the 'espionage' trial that began yesterday. İmamoğlu stated, "The greatest opposition struggle in the history of Turkey in the name of democracy and justice is being waged in Silivri today."
The first hearing of the 'espionage' case was held in Silivri. The trial, in which CHP's imprisoned Presidential Candidate and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, his advisor Necati Özkan, and journalist Merdan Yanardağ are being tried with a request for 20 years of imprisonment each, began with the defense of Hüseyin Gün, who testified by benefiting from effective remorse provisions.
İmamoğlu shared his speech from today's hearing on social media.
İmamoğlu added the following note to his post:
"The greatest opposition struggle in the history of Turkey in the name of democracy and justice is being waged in Silivri today.
We wage this struggle sometimes from a 12-square-meter cell; other times we continue it in courtrooms, and even in judicial processes consisting of baseless slanders that should never have turned into a lawsuit.
While doing all this, we are struggling under isolations, pressures, and psychological tortures that are difficult to describe; under conditions where the most fundamental principles of human rights and law are being demolished; because we know that we will win.
Who are 'we'? I say it from the heart; we are 86 million citizens. I am not leaving even one person out. Except for these ambitious ones. A handful. That is all."
