Imamoglu's 'fool' sentence upheld

The sentence received by Ekrem Imamoglu on the grounds that he insulted members of the Supreme Election Council (YSK) has been upheld by the Court of Appeal.

During his tenure as Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu was sentenced to 2 years, 7 months, and 15 days in prison for allegedly insulting YSK President Sadi Güven and 10 YSK members in a chain of events.

Upon Imamoglu's appeal against the verdict, the case was moved to the Court of Appeal. The process, which has been ongoing for approximately 2.5 years, has concluded.

Rejecting the appeal, the appellate court upheld the 2-year, 7-month, and 15-day sentence received by Ekrem Imamoglu in the "fool" case—in which he is being tried—by ruling that the sentence be updated to 1 year, 19 months, and 15 days in prison due to a calculation error, without holding a hearing.

Legal experts evaluating the confirmation decision regarding Imamoglu stated that the path to the Court of Cassation is open and that this does not mean a political ban.
