Important warning from Ahmet Ercan following the earthquake in Balıkesir

Following the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Balıkesir on August 10, tremors continue in the region. According to data from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), two earthquakes occurred in the Sındırgı district overnight with a 5-hour interval. The first earthquake took place at 01:06, and the second at 05:48. Both earthquakes were measured at a magnitude of 4.5, and the tremors were felt in surrounding provinces such as Istanbul, Izmir, Manisa, and Bursa, as well as in Balıkesir.

Geophysics Engineer Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan stated in a post on social media that the earthquakes should be monitored carefully in terms of the "Gelenbe fault." Ercan said, "The length of the fault formed after the earthquakes on August 10 and October 27 is approximately 20 kilometers. Aftershocks are developing along the Demyan fault, which extends in a northwest-southeast direction. The fact that the recent earthquakes occurred in the northeast is concerning for the Gelenbe fault. If this fault activates, the Balıkesir city center could be affected."
