Imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan to run for parliament in Pakistan

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Gohar Khan announced that imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan will run for parliament from prison in the general elections on February 8, 2024.

According to reports in the national press, Gohar Khan, speaking to reporters in Rawalpindi, stated that the incarcerated Imran Khan will compete for parliamentary seats from Islamabad, Lahore, and Mianwali in the general elections.

Experts emphasized that Khan will need to wage a long legal battle to be able to participate in the elections, noting that while the former Prime Minister is technically eligible to enter parliament, he faces numerous ongoing cases.

ARRESTED ON AUGUST 5

Imran Khan was apprehended by police and sent to prison on August 5 following an arrest warrant issued by a court in a corruption case against him.

The 3-year prison sentence handed down to former Prime Minister Khan in the corruption case was suspended on August 29, and his release on bail was ordered; however, on August 30, Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain, at the request of the prosecution, extended the detention period of Imran Khan, who is accused of "leaking state secrets."

Lawyer Gohar Khan became the new chairman of the PTI on December 2.
