Interim ruling in the Narin Güran murder trial: What happened on the third day of the hearing?
An interim ruling has been announced in the trial for the murder of 8-year-old Narin Güran, who was brutally killed in Diyarbakır. The hearing, which lasted 3 days and resulted in the decision to keep the defendants in custody, has been adjourned until December 26.
The first hearing of the trial regarding the murder of Narin Güran, who was made to appear as if she had gone missing in the Tavşantepe neighborhood of Diyarbakır's Bağlar district and whose lifeless body was found in a sack in the Eğertutmaz Stream 19 days later, has concluded with 4 detained defendants facing life imprisonment with no possibility of parole.
On the 3rd day of the trial, which began at the Diyarbakır 8th High Criminal Court the day before yesterday, the detained defendant and older brother, Enes Güran, finally presented his defense.
Claiming that there were contradictions in the statements made by the Diyarbakır Bar Association lawyers, Güran alleged that he was subjected to mistreatment during the detention process.
Asserting that he was at the local mosque when his sister's body was found and that he could not believe it when he was told, Enes Güran stated, "Neither Salim Güran nor Nevzat Bahtiyar, nor even their kings could take my sister from my home. If necessary, throw me in prison for years, do not let me see my family, but do not accuse me of harming my Narin. I am crying solely for my Narin. I am looking for my sister's killer. If I, my mother, or Salim have any guilt, let them punish us. Whoever has knowledge, whoever is guilty, may God punish them a thousand times over."
At this point, father Arif Güran left the courtroom, saying, "May God not let your rights go unpunished, I leave you to God."
Enes Güran's lawyer also argued that all details were being published despite the confidentiality order on the file.
Stating that he believes the location, date, and time of the murder are not yet clear, Güran's lawyer noted the following:
"The indictment was prepared in a hurry due to public pressure. It is stated that Enes was at the residence and participated in Narin's death based on narrowed base station records regarding the murder being committed in the family home. Due to Enes's movements throughout the day, this is merely suspicion. It is not possible to prove with this evidence that Enes committed this murder. Among the dozens of camera recordings collected, there is no evidence that Enes killed Narin. We do not accept some of the documents placed before us as material evidence. We still think there are other recordings.
Nevzat Bahtiyar is very cold-blooded. I have been observing him for 3 days. This man has either resigned himself to his fate or is laughing at us inside. I do not agree with the prosecution's opinion regarding the continuation of Enes's detention. I request the release and judicial control of my client, Enes Güran."
After the defense statements of the defendants and their lawyers, the hearing was adjourned for a while.
NEW FOOTAGE
After the break, the court panel decided to accept the request of the complainant Arif Güran and his attorney, the Diyarbakır Bar Association, and the Ministry of Family and Social Services to join the case; rejected the request to add older brother Baran Güran to the file as a complainant; decided to add the footage sent to the court from the Dara region (Martyr Gendarmerie Specialist Corporal Bilal Dicle Observation Point) to the file; accepted the request to hear the detained suspect R.A. as a witness; and decided to write a warrant to the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office to obtain a detailed supplementary report from those who prepared the narrowed base station report in the file, indicating which methods and base station data were used, which devices and criteria were followed, what the scientific techniques were, and whether there is a possibility of a margin of error.
The panel ruled for the continuation of the detention of the defendants, considering the possibility of escape, concealment, and evasion of capture, and adjourned the hearing to December 26.
