Internet prices to increase twice a year
The BTK has approved an automatic price increase for Türk Telekom's internet fees, effective every year on January 1 and July 1.
While internet infrastructure in Turkey remains significantly behind the global average, high prices are drawing criticism from users. The price hike decisions made by Türk Telekom in recent months have been made permanent through a regulation by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK).
TARIFF INCREASES WILL BE MANDATORY TWICE A YEAR
According to the decision taken by the BTK, Türk Telekom will automatically increase wholesale internet tariffs effective every year on January 1 and July 1. Service providers will then reflect this increase to their subscribers at the same or a lower rate.
USERS TO BE NOTIFIED ONE MONTH IN ADVANCE
Internet service providers will be required to announce price changes to the public at least one month before they take effect. The rate of the hikes will not be allowed to exceed the PPI (Producer Price Index) for a given period.
MILLIONS OF SUBSCRIBERS REACT TO HIKES
Millions of subscribers in Turkey, who pay high fees despite inadequate internet speeds, are reacting to the new hikes following the decision. Users argue that "it is unfair to increase bills without improving the infrastructure."
