Investigation launched into claims that 'protest detainees' headscarves were cut': 'Zero tolerance'
Nine people who protested AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at an event they attended were arrested by the court. Both judicial and administrative investigations have been launched regarding the claim that the headscarves of 7 young women among the detainees were cut during their admission to the Marmara Women's Closed Penal Institution. 3 correctional officers have been suspended from duty.
In a written statement issued by the Ministry of Justice's General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses, it was stated that reports had been published containing allegations that the headscarves of some detainees held at the Marmara Women's Closed Penal Institution for violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations were cut during their admission to the penal institution, and the following statements were included:
CHIEF PUBLIC PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE LAUNCHED AN INVESTIGATION
"Article 2 of the Law on the Execution of Penal and Security Measures No. 5275 stipulates that the rules regarding the execution of penal and security measures shall be applied without discrimination based on race, language, religion, sect, nationality, color, gender, birth, philosophical belief, national or social origin, political or other opinions or thoughts, economic power, or other social status, and without granting privileges to anyone; that no cruel, inhuman, degrading, or humiliating treatment shall be permitted in the execution of penal and security measures; and all work and procedures carried out in our penal institutions are performed in accordance with the aforementioned legislative provision."
The statement provided the following information:
"Following the appearance of the aforementioned allegation in some media outlets, an inspector was immediately assigned to thoroughly investigate the incident, and a judicial and administrative investigation was launched by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. For the integrity of the investigation, 3 correctional officers have been suspended from duty. In the management of our penal institutions, the utmost sensitivity is shown toward our spiritual values, and there is zero tolerance for behavior to the contrary."
