Investigation launched into imam who prayed at liquor store opening
An administrative investigation has been launched into mosque imam I.İ., who made headlines after reciting a prayer at the opening of a liquor store in Çerkezköy, Tekirdağ. The imam, who claimed he only realized the establishment was a liquor store after the fact, has resigned from his position as the Çerkezköy District President of Diyanet-Sen.
According to a report by Birgün newspaper, the Tekirdağ Provincial Mufti's Office has launched an administrative investigation after a mosque imam recited a prayer at the opening of a newly opened liquor store in the Çerkezköy district of Tekirdağ.
It was reported that the imam has resigned from his union post.
"I LEARNED DURING THE CEREMONY" DEFENSE
According to the information obtained, Erkaynak Mosque Imam I.İ. attended the opening ceremony of a business upon the invitation of some members of the congregation. Following the spread of footage on social media showing the imam praying at the opening, I.İ. was summoned to the Mufti's Office as part of the investigation, and his defense is expected to be taken in the coming days.
Making a statement on his social media account regarding the matter, I.İ. claimed that he learned the business he was invited to was a liquor store during the ceremony.
The imam, who alleged that he left the area as soon as he realized the situation, stated that the business owners also filed a complaint against him due to the process that unfolded.
Following these developments, it was learned that I.İ., whose administrative process is ongoing, has resigned from his position as the Çerkezköy District President of Diyanet-Sen.
