Investigation launched into TÜSİAD President Orhan Turan

An ex officio investigation has been launched into TÜSİAD President Orhan Turan for the crimes of 'Publicly Disseminating Misleading Information' and 'Attempting to Influence a Fair Trial'. It has been learned that instructions were given to the Istanbul Police Department's Security Branch to ensure that Orhan Turan and Mehmet Ömer Arif Aras, who was previously under investigation, are present at the courthouse.

It has been learned that Ömer Aras and Orhan Turan are being transferred to the Istanbul Courthouse.

THEY HAVE BEEN DETAINED

TÜSİAD President Orhan TURAN and TÜSİAD High Advisory Council President Mehmet Ömer Arif ARAS have been detained.

BEING TAKEN TO PROVIDE TESTIMONY

Aras and Turan were summoned to provide testimony. Orhan Turan will provide his testimony at the courthouse where he is being taken under police escort.

The statement from the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office is as follows:

"During the ongoing investigation, it was determined that the individual named TÜSİAD President Orhan TURAN, who spoke at the association's general assembly held on 13/02/2025, made statements in his speech regarding certain investigations and prosecutions being conducted by judicial authorities that were suggestive and directive toward the judiciary, contained disinformation, and were capable of disturbing public peace. Upon this determination, it was decided to launch an ex officio investigation into the suspect Orhan TURAN within the scope of the ongoing investigation for the crimes of Publicly Disseminating Misleading Information and Attempting to Influence a Fair Trial, and instructions were given to the Istanbul Police Department's Security Branch to ensure that the suspects Orhan TURAN and Mehmet Ömer Arif ARAS are present at our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office."

WHAT HAPPENED?

TÜSİAD High Advisory Council President Aras had said regarding the recent increase in detentions and arrests: "Elected mayors are being removed from office, and trustees are being appointed in their place. An investigation is launched against a political party leader, and then they are arrested for a different reason. Investigations are opened against a metropolitan mayor minutes after a press conference due to speeches they made. Journalists who publish expert opinions are detained, and the editor-in-chief is arrested. Newly graduated lieutenants are dismissed from the army. We can say that these events, which have occurred one after another in a very short time, have created anxiety in society and shaken confidence."

While evaluating inflation, Aras had also said: “It is essential for the public sector to tighten its belt at the same level as private sector companies and our citizens. We expect the savings to be made in the public sector in 2025 to be more effective in the fight against inflation. It is essential for the state to comply with budget discipline, control public expenditures, and increase savings in the public sector.”

In a second statement made by TÜSİAD following the investigation decision, the expression "We share our findings and suggestions, which we believe to be correct, with transparency within the framework of respect for democratic institutions and rules and the principle of participatory democracy; this is our responsibility to this country" was used.
