Investigation shock for Müjdat Gezen over program from a year ago
The 82-year-old master artist was summoned to give a statement over accusations of "inciting the public to hatred and hostility" due to remarks he made during a YouTube program with journalist Ayşenur Arslan.
Master artist Müjdat Gezen has been under investigation due to a YouTube program he recorded a year ago with journalist Ayşenur Arslan. The remarks Gezen made during the approximately 12-minute program titled "Bizim Ev" (Our Home) were examined by the prosecutor's office on the grounds of "inciting the public to hatred and hostility."
"YOUR MOTHER IS DEFINITELY YOUR MOTHER, BUT YOUR FATHER MIGHT BE YOUR FATHER"
The starting point of the investigation was the following statement Gezen made during the program:
In the Muslim tradition, a deceased person is buried with their mother's name. Because there is a saying in Anatolia: your mother is definitely your mother, but your father might be your father.
Following these words, an investigation was launched into Gezen, and he was requested to give a statement at the Istanbul Police Department.
GAVE HIS STATEMENT AT THE ISTANBUL POLICE DEPARTMENT
The 82-year-old artist went to the Istanbul Police Department located on Fatih Vatan Street to give his statement. In his statement, Gezen noted that his words were distorted and that his actual intention was to draw attention to the place of women in society.
"I AM ON THE SIDE OF WOMEN"
In the statement he gave to the prosecutor's office, Gezen included the following sentences:
''There is a saying by our Prophet Muhammad. Paradise lies at the feet of mothers. In our society's system, women are always marginalized, always pushed aside. That is why I am on the side of women. I want women to be more active and more productive in this society. Even in Parliament, there should be at least 250 female deputies right now. With these sentences, I drew attention to the place of women in society.''
